Game Description

Time to Brighten Somebody's Day

If a cup that's half empty is enough to make you feel down, then you can only imagine how much of a downer a cup that's completely empty must be. Fortunately, it doesn't have to stay that way. Every sad little goblet just needs a little helping hand from our friend, dihydrogen monoxide, more commonly known as water. Fill it up, and you will have a very Happy Glass in the palm of your hands!

Take On Water

Gauging the mood of a cup is simple; it's sad when it's empty and gleeful when it's full. Therefore, it stands to reason that all you have to do to fix a depressed cup's mood is to fill it up with water. Should be easy, right? It's not. Pouring a cup of water in this game might very well be the trickiest thing you ever do in your life, or my name isn't Brian!

  • Draw lines and shapes to direct running water into the cup.
  • Keep the cup from falling over or spilling its precious liquid.
  • Watch out for moving blocks! Set up walls and ramps to keep them from obstructing your water.
  • Complete over 500 puzzles and collect over 1000 stars!

More Challenges Await!

If pouring water into a tumbler doesn't sound entirely like your cup of tea, then fear not! This app has a host of additional challenges waiting for you to complete.

  • Play Don't Spill! - Get the cup to the bottom of the screen without toppling it or spilling its water.
  • See how many times you can flip the cup upright.
  • Earn coins that can be used to buy hints in the main game.
  • And more!

A Game Half Full!

With this game, you'll have a chance to employ your puzzle-solving abilities like never before. By combining game physics with drawing mechanics, the app gives you the power to find and create your own solutions. Get it on your phone, and you'll feel smarter and happier.

Happy Glass Review

- Review by Galvin

Happiness is a Full Cup

People aren't always the easiest things to read. Some see the vessel as half full and are upbeat and full of life. Others see it as half empty and tend to go by names like Negative Nancy or Bitter Brian. On the other hand, determining the mood of a cup is a whole lot easier, at least according to Happy Glass, a physics-based puzzle app made by our friends over at Crazy Games. If you've seen any screenshots or videos of the app in action, you may not be too enthralled by its flat and unoriginal visuals, but don't let first impressions fool you. This is a surprisingly fun and well-made game.

There's More than One Way to Fill a Cup with Water

The basic idea behind the game is simple. Just guide the water that pours out of the available faucet into the cup. You do this by drawing a line or a series of shapes using the touchscreen, and then let gravity do the rest. It's an easy enough premise to learn, and the app does a good job easing you into things for the first few levels, but it quickly becomes apparent that a lot of mileage can be squeezed out of these simple mechanics.

Some puzzles, most notable the ones found in the earlier stages of the game, can be solved easily by just drawing a downward slope to the cup in question, or making a wedge to serve as a ramp. However, this game steadily ups the ante the further on you go. Sometimes it will require you to fill two glasses simultaneously, meaning you need to find a way to evenly distribute the limited amount of water you're given between them. Other times, it'll throw moveable blocks or balls at you that can obstruct the water's flow, meaning you need to find a method to get them out of your way. Sometimes, there won't even be a floor underneath your poor cup, so you need to make one yourself, and eventually, you'll even have to navigate through spinning gears and heated pads to guide the water to its destination.

The Full and the Empty

There is a lot of variety to the puzzles you're given, but what's really great about this game is that the solutions are very open-ended. Drawing your solutions from scratch means there is no single solution for each puzzle; as long as you're able to fill all the cups up, it counts. You do get a better score the less ink you use, but even then, it still feels like there are plenty of optimal solutions.

If there is a quibble to be found here, it's that it can get repetitive at times. Often when it throws a new curveball at you, you'll go through a string of puzzles that seem to have the same solution, albeit with all the elements arranged differently on the screen. While it may serve the purpose of drilling the new mechanics into your head before putting you up against the tougher puzzles, it does get a little excessive. The difficulty level can also be sporadic; one puzzle can end up being a real head scratcher, but the dozen or so that come after it could end up being deceptively easy. It's not a big deal, but it is odd regardless.

More Fun to be Had

If there's one thing Crazy Games really deserves credit for, it's in realizing how much potential they had with the simple formula they developed. Using physics to guide water into a beaker may be the main attraction, but they can do a whole lot of other cool things too, which this app is very eager to take advantage of with its Challenge minigames. One involves deleting blocks one by one to guide a cup of water to the bottom of the screen without spilling anything. Another has you seeing how many times you can successfully flip the cup over after tossing it in the air. Challenges are not very in-depth, and they're still very much works-in-progress, but they're a fun distraction that come with the added benefit of scoring you some extra coins that can be used to buy additional hints in the main game.

Conclusion: Something to be Optimistic About

This game might not have the most stellar production values, and its level progression can be a tad inconsistent, but those are just a couple bubbles in the refreshing drink that this app really is. The mechanics are easy to grasp, most of the puzzles are smartly designed, there's a lot of variety to be found, and the whole package is just fun all around. No matter how the water flows, this app is definitely worth your time.

Updated: November 12th 2020 - Added Sheep Squad

At the time of writing Covid-19 is still a nuisance, and definitely more than a minor disruption for most of the world's population. Draw poker slot machine. It's affecting lives and, in many countries, there has been a massive rise in workers now using their homes as their place of work. If you're working from home then you're saving a lot of time and gaining a lot of time as a result of the lack of commute, and the comfort of your working environment. That's why you're here, right? You're looking for great new games to play on your mobile phone, and ideally, ones that don't cost you a penny.

That's why we're here too.

We originally started this list because a mass of developers came forward, offering up their normally-premium games for free as a result of the increased isolation of society due to Covid-19. But, let's face it, working from home isn't exactly a trend we are going to see going away. Over time, however, the list has evolved into a selection of the finest free mobile games, be that free to start, free to play, or just plain free. We've deliberately tip-toed around some of the bigger names which you already know, to bring you this carefully curated list of fantastic free games.

The best 6 games to play with friends while social-distancing

So, what we'll do here is compile and regularly update a list of the best games - including discounted premium games and free to play games - which you can grab right now for your iPhone or Android device.

As with everything, some of these discounts are limited time or change rapidly, we'll do our best to keep the post updated - but if we do miss anything then do feel free to reach out to us and let us know in the comments below.

But for now, click on through the big button below to start finding out the current best free games to play on your iPhone or Android device.

Tvinnr

Genre: Puzzle

Tvinnr is an interesting take on the merging genre where you'll gain additional points for combining two tokens instead of the usual shtick where they become something larger. It's a very laid back approach to this kind of game so it's perfect for those spare moments where you just want to zone out a little.

Super Fowlst 2

Genre: Action

Slots plus casino no deposit bonus. Super Fowlst 2 is a delightful, easy to pick up platformer where you tap the left and right-hand sides of the screen to bounce a chicken around the levels. It's definitely got a pinball vibe going and it's bright, cheerful aesthetic certainly makes the experience feel much more wholesome.

Alternoidz

Genre: Shooter

If you're a fan of arcade shooters then you might want to give Alternoidz a try. You'll have to survive a relentless onslaught of asteroids and spaceships, all of which would like nothing more than to destroy your poor ship. You can earn coins to spend on upgrades the longer you survive that will help you gun down more enemy ships.

Dungeon Faster

Genre: Adventure, Card/board game, Casual, Hardcore

Dungeon Faster is an excellent rogue-like deck-builder that was nominated by our readers as one of the best games to release in 2019. It's been updated since it was held in such high esteem, adding an Arena Mode that allows players to battle it out for leaderboard supremacy.

Words for a bird

Genre: Puzzle, Word game

Words for a bird is the latest micro-puzzle game out from puzzle-powerhouse Bart Bonte. While it's certainly not got the colour theming of his most recent issuing, it's visual punning is exceptional and - by golly - the art style is memorable and.. well, lovely.

Gogogo!

Genre: Casual, Party/mini-games

Gogogo! is a fantastic local-multiplayer mobile game which wins its place in our list due to a caveat. 20 of the games included in it are completely free, and they're great - each is a microgame like you might find in a Warioware game, albeit expanded for four players and made competitive.

That said, you can watch a single advert to unlock an extra game for two days, or pay for additional content. But with the 20 starting games these extra ones really feel more like DLC or expansions than content behind a paywall.

Genshin Impact

Genre: 3D, Action, Adventure

Possibly one of the most hyped mobile games of recent years, Genshin Impact - known for its sweeping green landscapes reminiscent of Zelda Breath of The Wind - has definitely earned its place in this list. Within days of launch there are floods of people praising its clever use of gatcha as much as they are praising its vast worlds, and frankly, it sounds well worth the effort of a quick, free download.

Spooky Squashers

Genre: Arcade, Sports

Easily one of the best Halloween games of recent years, and one of the most memorable games to experiment with Squash, Spooky Squashers is an arcade game with a sporty feel to it. It's definitely one that we're going to be playing for a while, it's rare to find a game with such an interesting twist on a familiar sport and genre.

Democratic Socialism Simulator

Genre: Simulation
Find out more about Democratic Socialism Simulator

If you're into political games Democratic Socialism Simulator might be for you. It sees you taking on the role of the first socialist president of the United States. You'll have to manage taxes, tackle issues without upsetting voters and be aware that your allies may turn on you. Please note, this is only free on iOS

Rainmaker - The Beautiful Flood

Available on: iOS + Android
Find out more about Rainmaker - The Beautiful Flood

Rainmaker - The Beautiful Flood is a minimalistic puzzler game that's incredibly pretty. Each level will see you guide a bubble to a door and it won't do much in the way of hand-holding either. Whenever new elements are introduced you'll need to work out how best to use them

Monolisk

Genre: Adult, RPG

Monolisk is a beautiful-looking action-RPG where players can create their own levels for others to try and beat. It was recently updated to introduce a whole range of new cards for inventing your own stages. It's also had a host of UI improvements that makes finding the best levels much easier.

Hellrider 3

Genre: Action, Racing

Lively arcade racer Hellrider 3 is the next step in the evolution of the HellRider series, and it's free. It's a massive change up from the previous two entries, which were almost like dodge'em'up car games. Now, in HellRider, you control your vehicle in a third-person perspective, going on wasteland rides, shooting skellingtons and upgrading your ride with the money you earn from quests.

That's not all either, there are special abilities and bosses to fight too. It's a great little arcade driving game with a whole lot going on.

Dadish

Genre: Platform

Dadish is an amusing little platformer about a single father, who is also a radish, reluctantly setting out on an adventure to find his 40 offspring who have no concept of self-preservation. It has a whimsical, off-kilter sense of humour that's excellent fun and controls well too, which isn't always the case for touch screen platformers.

Retro Bowl

Free Games To Download On My Phone
Genre: Sports

Retro Bowl is an excellent retro-inspired American Football game. You'll only need to take control of the offence and it's so satisfying when you aim a pass perfectly or successfully dodge your way through a pack of opposition defenders. Another nice touch, if you don't enter your own name it gives you a cool randomly generated one instead, I got Marshal Cannon.

Rumble Stars

Available on: iOS + Android
Find out more about Rumble Stars

When it comes to talking about some of Pocket Gamer's favourite free games, it would be a massive mistake to leave out Frogmind's Rumble Stars. It's a perfect fusion of strategy mana systems and pick-up-and-play sports gaming, and all the while it's bright, colourful and so engaging that we keep playing even though we've already got four chests waiting to unlock.

Night of the Full Moon

Genre: Card battler

Night of the Full Moon is an excellent card battler in the same mould as Slay the Spire. If you're still waiting on that to come out this makes for an excellent alternative, though you will have to pay for some additional character classes.

Battle Legion

Genre: Action, Multiplayer, Strategy

Auto-battlers and PvP experiences are hardly something new, but Battle Legion combines style, charm and strategy in fairly fresh feeling way. Due to the importance of fine-placement, unit levels, runes and more it makes it a hard game to look away from - there's a massive, simulation-style pull to micromanage, tweak and refine in order to find the perfect strategy for your current units.

Atoms GO!

Genre: Puzzle

Atoms Go! is a strategy game that can be enjoyed by 1-4 players either locally or online, perfect with enjoying with friends in our current situation then. Players will take it in turns to place their atoms into a grid in an attempt to capture those that belong to other players but you have to avoid placing too many together otherwise they will explode. Last Atom standing will be the victor!

Samsara Room

Genre: Adventure, Puzzle

Samsara Room for mobile is a remastering of one of Rusty Lake's first escape room games. The original is still available on Newgrounds - whilst Flash Player still clings on - but this updated edition includes new puzzles and story to discover.

Shadow Frog

Genre: Action, Platform

Shadow Frog is a delightful auto-runner platformer where you'll be constantly pursued throughout each level by a shadow of yourself that will imitate your previous moves. So not only are your timing and platforming skills being tested but you'll also need a good memory so you can accurately predict the shadow's next move.

Tales of Crestoria

Genre: Action, Adventure, RPG

We've definitely seen a lot of hero-collecting RPGs over the years, and it hasn't really been a genre where we've seen much innovation. Tales of Crestoria will likely be the start of a shift in that as it plans on bringing classic Tales of storytelling and world-building into a genre which normally, doesn't really do much in that area.

As it's free to download on both iOS and Android, there's also no reason to not dive into it and give it a quick shot - let us know what you think below.

Amethlion

Genre: Adventure

Amethlion is a retro-inspired, open-world RPG where you can spend hours exploring, crafting and battling various foes. Dungeons are randomly generated so if you end up enjoying the core combat it should hopefully keep you entertained for a good amount of time. The Android version is currently not free, however.

Lure

Genre: Arcade

Lure, which was originally flash-released at the same time as we first covered it during Pocket Gamer LaunchPad #1, is an exceptional refinement of the arcade form into sleek, modern design. It features a thrumming, dynamic soundtrack which the game's background react to, and the first 10 levels of the game are completely free to play with no intermittent adverts or in-app purchases required. While you can pay for extra levels to be unlocked if you enjoy the game, the core 10 levels are a great little fun experience which delivers much more quality than games 10 or 100 times its size.

Pako Caravan

Genre: Casual

The next entry in the Pako series is here, and it's a little bit different than its predecessors, although.. interestingly, it actually takes us back to the days of the earliest mobile games. Pako Caravan merges up Pako's funky, brightly-coloured drifting with the simple mechanics of Snake. You'll snake around cheerful, busy maps, creating convoys (or, some might say, caravans) of vehicles as you try to create as long a chain as possible.

Pako Caravan is available on both the App Store and Google Play.

The Everlasting Regret

Genre: Adventure, Puzzle

Free Games To Download And Play On My Phone

The Everlasting Regret is a beautiful casual puzzler that's been made by five graduates at Tencent. It's centred around the Chinese poem Song of Everlasting Regret and boasts a gorgeous visual style that matches the relaxed gameplay loop.

Sheep Squad

Genre: Strategy

Sheep Squad is very much reminiscent of Worms but with the popular farm animal instead of wiggly fellows. It's packed with a variety of different weapons to try and defeat your opponents with alongside a cheerful art style that makes the game a true joy to play.
